Do Not Forget Your Best Friend…by an Inmate
Best Friends are Like Puppies
In 1996 I came to prison as a result of a conviction for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance; cocaine. I was never caught with any drugs, money or guns, but I am serving a long prison sentence in federal prison based on word-of mouth evidence only. The testimony against me was full of lies which I had no way of countering. The original investigation included five defendants. Among them was my best friend. The FBI never came with an indictment for him like they did me. That’s because I refused to testify against him or anyone else. I am an honorable man and felt that telling on my friends was just wrong. I have paid a dear price for that commitment and regret that it appears my loyalty to my old friend has not been returned.
The Lord has commanded us not to bear false witness, and this I would never do, however, the hardship my plight has laid upon my family has not been worth the misplaced devotion I once placed so far above all else. I have been very fortunate in that I have had the opportunity to learn how those priorities were so poorly placed and the Lord has still left me time in my life to do some good in the world; with my family and my community.
